Bodog’s MLB odds on the Detroit Tigers-Seattle Mariners series, a two-game set that opens in the Pacific Northwest on Tuesday night, certainly will be altered a bit when released on Tuesday as the Tigers’ best hitter, Miguel Cabrera, won’t play.
But don’t worry Tigers backers, Cabrera isn’t hurt but instead taking the time off to be with his wife for the birth of their second child. Cabrera's wife, Rosangel, is scheduled to have labor induced on Tuesday near their home in Miami. The Tigers play Tuesday night and Wednesday afternoon in Seattle, so it’s virtually impossible for Cabrera to even get to Seattle in time. He hit his 10th home run of the season in Sunday's win over the Dodgers, and his 40 RBIs lead the major leagues; his .331 average is third on the team. Either Brennan Boesch or Johnny Damon figures to hit cleanup, while Don Kelly or Ryan Raburn figures to start at first.
Meanwhile, Detroit center fielder Austin Jackson, who looks like the AL Rookie of the Year so far, should be good to go against the Mariners after missing Sunday’s game against the Dodgers after getting beaned Saturday night before by Ramon Troncoso. Jackson, who is hitting.337 with 11 RBIs in 42 games, probably will have a puffy left eye for at least a few more days.
This series finishes a seven-game road trip for Detroit, which is 3-2 on it so far. Sunday’s win improved the Tigers to 16-0 this season when leading after six innings. Meanwhile, this two-gamer is the end of a seven-game homestand for Seattle, which is 2-3 on it. The M’s dropped the final two games over the weekend against San Diego, totaling just two runs. Offense has been the issue all season as Seattle ranks last in the AL in runs, batting average and on-base percentage, among other categories.
